Rabbi Randy Kafka Temple Israel South Shore, North Easton, MA QUESTIONS FOR FURTHER REFLECTION AND
DISCUSSION
WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS How would you summarize these remedies for anxiety in your own words? Do they make sense to you? Do you prefer one more than the others, and why? Have you ever handled your anxiety with a similar “remedy”? Look at the text of the Shema in a siddur/prayerbook. Why do you think its recitation is considered to have protective value? This teaching occurs elsewhere in the Talmud, with a twist. In Megillah 3a, the same story is told, but the remedies are listed in this way: Recite the full Shema… if you are in a filthy place (where you can’t recite the Shema), jump four cubits… and if you can’t jump, say the incantation. Does this order change your understanding of the remedies? If so, in what way(s)? Previous Teaching Return to Temple Israel Website |
